SAT and ACT prep timeline — align tests with your application calendar

When to start SAT or ACT, how many attempts, and syncing scores with ED and RD deadlines — a study abroad consulting guide.

'Can I take the SAT once in senior year?' Often not enough. Standardized tests should be planned backward like essays and activities. Early November ED and EA deadlines need finalized scores; retakes and score reporting take time. Many students start serious planning in junior year. Here is how to align SAT and ACT prep with your study abroad application calendar.

SAT vs ACT — pick a lane first

Both are widely accepted for US undergrad applications; most schools take either. SAT emphasizes math and evidence-based reading and writing; ACT adds speed and includes a science section (with optional writing). Try both in practice, then focus on the stronger format — switching late usually delays everything. Consulting starts from target schools' mid-ranges and upper quartiles to set a goal score.

Grade-by-grade timeline

Grade 10: build fundamentals and use practice tests to learn formats. Grade 11 first semester: serious prep and a first official sitting (spring or summer). Grade 11 second semester: retake if below target; check whether any schools still expect subject tests for that cycle. Grade 12 fall: ideal window to lock scores before ED/EA. A winter sitting before RD is possible but collides with essays and recommendations. Two well-spaced attempts often beat one rushed try.

Attempts and score choice

Multiple sittings are allowed; many schools use best scores or superscore section highs. Beyond two or three tries, returns usually shrink. After scores arrive, confirm official reporting timelines — ED schools must receive reports before the deadline. Consulting weighs 'Is another point worth the time?' against your school list.

Test-Optional — skip or still submit?

Some schools are test-optional, but for international applicants a strong score still signals readiness at competitive programs. For Reach schools and selective majors, plan as if submission helps unless policy clearly says otherwise. 'Optional' does not mean 'better to withhold' by default — read each school's current rules.

Avoid stacking tests on essays and activities

Late junior and early senior year pile SAT/ACT, recommendation asks, essay drafts, and activity summaries together. Block the calendar: protect two to three weeks around test dates from heavy essay work, or pause essays before a sitting. Consulting often maps one page: tests, applications, and activities by quarter.
