Essay Writing Tips

Format

A consistent essay structure

Strong essays maintain clear paragraph structure and use transition words for coherence. US Common App essays are often narrative and require smooth flow. UK and Asia Personal Statements are more formal, with each paragraph covering distinct content. (Example: Background – Achievements – Extracurricular Activities – Conclusion)

Story

Open with a compelling story

If the opening sentence fails to grab attention, the entire essay suffers. Draw on your most memorable life experience and build a narrative with exposition, rising action, climax, and resolution — cause, effect, and growth. Admissions officers want unique experiences; avoid generic essays.

Message

Deliver a clear message

A story without meaning cannot reach a strong conclusion. Your essay should convey a message connected to your intended major. For example, a student who expanded an ocean cleanup campaign after experiencing environmental pollution demonstrates both Environmental Studies fit and meaningful activity.

Aspiration

Share your aspirations

The conclusion is as important as the opening. Write passionately about your five-year goals, vision, intended focus after admission, how the university supports your goals, and how you will contribute to the campus community.

Required Documents & Essay Guide

Required Application Documents

01

Online Application

Prepare personal information and details required on the application. In the US, most schools use the Common App; UC schools use the UC system; others may have their own portals. Requirements vary by country, school, and major — verify carefully.

02

Official Transcript

Obtain an official transcript from your school. Submit projected grades if the term is ongoing, but always submit final grades after the semester ends.

03

Letter of Recommendation

Request letters from 1–3 teachers or counselors who know you well and can highlight your strengths. Common App teachers submit directly; other systems may allow student upload.

04

SAT / TOEFL / IB / AP (Standardized Tests)

Submit predicted or final scores from SAT, TOEFL, IB, AP, IELTS, etc. Enter scores on the application; testing bodies (e.g., IBO) may send official results directly to universities.

05

Resume

Include volunteer work, leadership, research, programs, clubs, competitions, and all activities.

See our Extracurricular Consulting page for detailed Resume writing guidance.

Essay Writing Process

01

Essay Prompt Preparation

Identify essay prompts by country and school — Common App and supplemental essays in the US; Personal Statements in the UK and Asia.

02

Topic Selection & Brainstorming

Select topics and brainstorm experiences that maximize your message. Prepare separately for different prompt types such as values and personality.

03

Essay Outline & First Draft

Work with your essayist to outline by section and keyword, review paragraph requirements, then draft the essay.

04

Final Draft

Revise through regular meetings until the essay reaches a polished final version.
